change variable type

/* Title: Change a Variable's type Sort: 3 */ Variables are either 'unassigned' or 'assigned to an entity'.

In the following step-by-step examples, we will :-

  • Assign a Variable to an Entity

  • Unassign a Variable that is assigned to an Entity

From the Variables list page, select a Variable.

In the sidebar -

  • Click Change Type

Choose Entity variable type to Assign a Variable to an Entity or Choose Unassigned variable type to Unassign a Variable

Assign a Variable to an Entity

Variables assigned to an entity will inherit that entity's properties and so will only accept input that matches that entity's text or pattern values (see About Entities). Variables created elsewhere in the platform, via a Search & Create field, will be automatically unassigned, so assign them here if required.

Choose the Entity variable type from the sidebar

In the sidebar -

  • Select the Entity you wish to assign the Variable to

Search & Create field In this field you can -

    • Click to select an existing entity from the dropdown list

    • Start typing the name of an existing entity to find it quickly. Click to select the desired entity when it appears.

    • Type the name of an entity that you wish to create. Click 'Create New Entity: [entity name]' to create the new entity.

  • Click Save Variable

Your edited Variable will be shown on the Variables list page

Unassign a Variable

You may want to unassign a variable from an entity so that it no longer inherits that entity's properties, enabling it to hold whatever data is put into it.

Choose the Unassigned variable type from the sidebar

Click Save Variable in the sidebar

Your edited Variable will be shown on the Variables list page
